A reformed nix. Drakjan has been living as a harmless freshwater merman for so long he sometimes almost believes in the lie himself. Almost. A deadly hunter. Hraban has dedicated his life to taking down creatures like Drakjan, protecting those who cannot protect themselves. An uneasy truce. When fate forces them together, the nix and the hunter discover a dangerous attraction… and a threat that can destroy everything Drakjan has come to love.

I enjoyed this book. The main character is a somewhat stereotypical brooding, anti-social vampire-with-a-heart-of-gold type, except that is he a nix who craves drowning and eating people instead of drinking their blood. The introduction of a confused and attractive hunter works well in the context, and watching them learn to co-exist and eventually work together is interesting and occasionally funny. Although I prefer Gabriel's Part-Time Minion book, this one was solidly enjoyable.

Still Waters Alex Gabriel 9781518727719 Books Reviews

This one was recommended to me by a friends and it was free, so I gave it a shot. Having read it, I can now say I DEFINITELY would have paid for it =) Lyrically and beautifully written, for one, I was drawn in by the dual world story that wasn't--thank goodness--bogged down with too much detail. Fantasy is so often a detail nightmare, but here the author gave the reader the benefit of the doubt for imagining, and let let out enough detail for us to make up our own as we went along. The romance between Drakjan and the hunter felt believable because it isn't sappy; they aren't sappy. They are both predators and I was glad their relationship didn't turn into something that didn't match their own personalities. I will be following this author in the future =)
I really loved this. I always enjoyed the dark, Grimm brothers type of fairy tales and this reminded me of them. Both Drakjan and Hraban are from another world than the innocent one they have taken shelter/refuge in. In fact, if they were in the other world they would have killed each other no doubt. This natural enemies comes up pretty quickly in the novella but in the new world they have no real need to be be enemies anymore and in fact have more in common with each other than with the rest of the world's inhabitants.
If you expect the usual M/M interspecies (human/merman) erotica with a dainty touch of romance, stay away from this short story.
Hraban and Drakjan are predators (as the author tend to repeat too often - I got it the first time, really) and they are strong and wild and demanding. Besides, Drakjan is not a merman and what he really is and what he does with his identity is the kernel of the story.

I loved this story, how it seemed a bit flat at first, only to crease with ever growing tension further on. The apparently serene scenes of Drakjan amusing himself in the depths of his lake are among the best stylistical exercises I have read in a while.
While this work is very well plotted and generally well written, I still missed more polish in a setting such as this, with a plot such as this, with characters so complex, finesse and subtlety are never ever enough and there are paragraphs which should be rewritten not because they are bad but because they are not good enough.
This book was not what I was expecting and I absolutely love it for that! Drakjan has a truly unique and quirky inner dialogue and his view of the world is lovely in its straightforwardness. You get a genuine feel for his age and experience through the way he thinks and the tavern songs of yore alongside his callous view of death definitely help add to his feeling of simplistic wisdom. His craving for killing reminds me of how many serial killers have been described in other books and documentaries but Drakjan's determination to overcome that also reminds me of anyone trying to give up something they love up, be it sweets or cigarettes or what have you, and this makes him relatable despite his overall vibe of 'other-ness'. The way he views Hraban and his predatory mien is visceral and draws a believable fast-burn relationship, I'm loathe to say romance because the common view of 'romance' in novels is tawdry and frail compared to what Drakjan and Hraban have for each other which is both carnal and deeply emotional on a more instinctive and primal level. It develops fast and in the presence of well-founded conflict but a common enemy pushes those conflicts aside and ignites something potent and heady in its wake. Overall It was wonderful and different in the best of ways and despite the perfectly succinct ending I wouldn't mind seeing more stories in the future from these two, perhaps even a gander from the hunter's eyes for a change.
Although I enjoyed Still Waters, I’m not sure how many stars to give it. Somewhere between 3-5 stars.

I picked up Still Waters while I was feeling bored and restless after reading a handful of books that were ok but failed to suck me in. I wanted a book that I couldn't put down, one that captivated me with its writing, immersed me in its world. Still Waters delivered in those aspects but I wanted more. More story. More relationship building. More of this world.

Still Waters is a paranormal story that was written for M/M Romance Group's Love Is An Open Road event. The writing is solid and the story captivating but because it's a short story, it felt some aspects were a bit rushed and other lacked detail. We get hints of the dynamics in the Still Waters paranormal worlds but nothing too in depth. In many ways the world reminded me of Jim Butcher's Dresden Files series and I wondered if I hadn't read those, would I have felt a little lost by some of the dynamic and world-building in Still Waters. Additionally, the interactions between the characters are fairly limited and brief. What interactions there are, are fantastic, there just aren't that many of them. We spend most of the time in Drakjan's head as he goes about his solitary life. It's a really interesting place to be and I thoroughly enjoyed it, but I would have loved more interaction between him and the rest of the characters as well.

Finally, the "romance" aspect of Still Waters is miniscule. It's intreguing and fresh but only touched very briefly.

I was happy with everything Alex Gabriel gave me to sink my teeth into with Still Waters I just wish there could have been more. This is definitely an author that I will pick up again.
